Farm Life Spotlight: Fameflower Farm

In 2015, Eric and Sara made a life-altering decision. They traded their cozy condo near Chicago for a sprawling mini-farm in the heart of Middle Tennessee. Fameflower Farm, as it came to be known, was more than just a change of scenery – it marked the beginning of a transformative journey into farming and homesteading.

Initially, the couple's motivation was simple: they wanted to grow and raise the most nutritious food possible for their family. They cared deeply about the quality of food and the well-being of the animals involved. This passion led them to embrace a holistic mindset in all their farm decisions, from planting crops to raising animals.

Life at Fameflower Farm is far from the 9-to-5 grind. Eric and Sara's day starts around 7 am and ends around 9 pm. It's a testament to their dedication and commitment to their newfound lifestyle.

Sara's favorite part of the homestead is undoubtedly the garden. Over the years, it has expanded to include a 20x40 in-ground garden, a dozen metal raised beds, a permaculture food forest in the making, and space for muscadine grapes and other fruit trees. While they might not grow every fruit and vegetable their family consumes (those bananas are hard to resist), they're determined to grow as much as they can, naturally and sustainably.

Among the farm's quirky characters, the turkeys take center stage. These curious birds are always ready to greet visitors, including Sara when she returns home. They've even appointed themselves as "garden helpers," eagerly inspecting any hole dug for planting.

Every farm has its share of challenges, and for Eric and Sara, it's the rocky terrain. Their property boasts little soil, which complicates everything from fencing to planting. Even stepping into electric netting can be tricky due to the shallow soil. However, they've learned to adapt and find workarounds.

The most satisfying moments on the farm come when they sit down to share a meal with friends and family, knowing that everything on the table was grown or raised right on their land. It's a gratifying experience that connects them to the essence of their farm life.

When asked about advice for fellow small farmers or aspiring homesteaders, Eric and Sara emphasize the importance of keeping your "why" in mind. Farming can be challenging, but knowing your purpose and passion can provide the motivation needed to persevere.

Over their nearly nine-year journey, Eric and Sara have witnessed a shift in the farming industry. Today, farming and homesteading seem more popular than ever, with a wealth of information readily available to those interested.

Sara is hopeful about the future of farming. She envisions a regenerative approach where more farmers give back to the land, creating healthier soil and, consequently, healthier people. It's a vision of farming that focuses on sustainability and the well-being of both the land and its caretakers.

Within their community, Eric and Sara strive to be a positive influence. They encourage others to grow something, nurturing a sense of self-sufficiency and a deeper connection to the earth.

In the tranquil landscape of Fameflower Farm, Eric and Sara have found a way of life that aligns with their values and nourishes their souls. Their journey reminds us that the path to a more sustainable and fulfilling existence may begin with a single, transformative decision.
